With the recent conversations on the list about motion capture, I thought I
would mention that I've just attended a seminar in which the motion capture
hardware "Flock Of Birds" (Ascension) and software "Puppeteer" (Imagine) were
demonstrated. Puppeteer is an IPAS package for 3D Studio. The presentation
was interesting, though the software looked to be very buggy (they had to
re-boot the Pentium a half dozen times during the hour and a half I was
there.) The Flock of Birds is literally a small black box which emits a
magnetic field (50' radius, I believe). Wires connect to sensors attatched to
a person, and as he moves the stick figure in 3D Studio moves. This is saved
to disk and later parented to an object (in this case, they used a skeleton).
The result: a skeleton walking around.
While there were numerous problems during the presentation (over and above the
crashes), it was pointed out that the software is still in Beta form. I
thought it had great potential, and hope that we see such interesting things
for Lightwave when it moves to the IBM (thereby gaining a potentially much
larger user base) and supports plug-ins as 3DS does.
BTW, Puppeteer lists at around $800, which is pretty cheap (if they iron out
all the problems). The black box is a hefty $25,000 or so.
One more thing: Motion Capture happens to be the cover stroy of the new
Computer Graphics World, for those interested.
I know that the above information is not directly Lightwave, so I apologize to
those who would rather not see non-Lightwave information here. ...does anyone
know if there is a list for 3D in general?
